Meet the CanTeener's you’re clocking kms for

CanTeen is the only New Zealand organisation dedicated to supporting young people aged 13 - 24 living with cancer as a patient, sibling or bereaved sibling, as well as children of a parent with cancer. CanTeen creates opportunities where members can share their experiences with other young people who know what it is like to deal with cancer, so that they don’t have to go through it alone. By fundraising and Cranking the kms you're supporting young people just like these - so click on the stories below and find out a little more about the wonderful young people you’re clocking kms for.

Thank you

  • Meet Vicky

My life completely changed when I was 13. It started with a cough which just kept getting worse until I couldn’t breathe. My mum took me to the hospital in Wellington before they transferred me to Christchurch hospital. It was there I found out I had a tumour; I had cancer.

  • Meet Jacob

I’ve always been athletic and sporty so I noticed quickly a large lump that had grown on my neck. The doctors said it was most likely just a swollen lymph node and that in a couple of weeks it would go away. However several weeks later and several tests later revealed I had cancer.

  • Meet Lucy

I was 17 when my big brother James passed away. He was only 20 years old. It was November 2010 when my older brother James was diagnosed with Renal Translocation Carcinoma, which is cancer of the kidney. Before, I remember James had been ill on and off and had lost a lot of weight. He was firefighter so we thought it was just from work but when he started to show a little jaundice we were concerned.

About The Crank

Crank the tracks and clock the kms and help CanTeener’s leave Cancer behind! Cancer derails the lives of young New Zealanders everyday and CanTeen is there to help them live the best life possible and get back on track. We can’t do it alone, CanTeen receives no government funding and relies on public donations and people like you to fundraise so we can be there for young people living with their own cancer diagnosis or that of a close family member. So get fit while cranking the kms so we can be there to support young people facing cancer when they need us the most!

Take the challenge clocking the kms and raising the counter, so that young people can move forward and not just survive cancer but thrive!

About CanTeen

Imagine growing up in the shadow of cancer. That’s the reality for hundreds of young people throughout New Zealand.

CanTeen is the only New Zealand organisation dedicated to supporting young people aged 13 - 24 living with cancer as a patient, sibling or bereaved sibling, as well as children of a parent with cancer. CanTeen’s mission is to ensure no 13-24 year old will ever face cancer alone. We support young people aged 13-24 when cancer turns their world upside down and helps them cope with the physical, emotional and practical impact of living with cancer. Living with cancer is traumatic at any time, but even more so for young people already facing challenges of identity, independence, education, relationships and employment.

Since its inception, CanTeen has had a clear focus on the needs of young people living with cancer. CanTeen’s foundation was built upon the fundamental belief that young people – through meeting, talking and sharing their experiences – are better able to cope with the uncertainties of living with cancer.

CanTeen is about embracing life and getting on with things – helping people living with cancer continue to enjoy life and everything it has to offer. Find out more about CanTeen and what we do, visit www.canteen.org.nz.
